Darren takes on the Grandfondo Whistler

‘Twas a sunny Saturday morning, when all through the Riverwood houses not sales rep was moving, not even their spouses’… Well all but one, for our fearless team leader Darren Davis was eagerly waiting for the gun to fire at the start of The Grandfondo Whistler. After spending all summer training day and night, pouring out blood, sweat and tears…Just kidding, he only wishes he did.

“Finishing in my category 905th out of 1179 riders normally wouldn’t be satisfying – However consider I rode my bike twice before the Grandfondo for approx. 1.5 hr’s as my training schedule, just finishing the grueling climb to whistler was an accomplishment in itself… 5.43 hours to get there, and it was all worth it”.

The race started in the early hours of Saturday morning in Downtown Vancouver, riders took in the sunrise as they crossed the Lions Gate Bridge and peddled up Taylor Way to the breath taking views of the Sea to Sky Highway all the way to Whistler Village. When asked early Monday morning how it went, he simply responded, “It kicked my @$$ that’s for sure, probably the hardest thing I’ve done. I felt fine until Squamish, and oh man that last stretch is long and hard”. When asked about the event itself he had nothing but compliments, “It was a very well run and organized event, with supporters on bikes, motorcycles and vans, food and drink stands along the way pumping music to keep you going. My only question is, where is the beer garden?”. You can expect him to do it again next year, “but I am actually going to train for it”.

“The 2010 RBC GranFondo Whistler was the first world-class gran fondo in Canada. In 2011, the event attracted 7,000 riders from all around the globe who were given the chance to ride the world-renowned Sea to Sky Highway in a dedicated lane from downtown Vancouver to Whistler. The route features breathtaking views of Howe Sound and challenging climbs through the Coast Mountain Range. If you haven’t yet, come join us for the ride of your life. It’s super fun, organized, and gives you the space to ride at the pace you ride. Registration open date for the 2013 RBC GranFondo Whistler will be announced soon”. If you are someone who enjoys riding bicycles, check out the Grandfondo Website for more information about event dates, registration, and biker categories:
